While I still do wish that there was more actual gameplay, I understand that it's hard to write play-by-plays, and that this series isn't really about the game at all, but the players strange and, sometimes confusing, web of lies and relationships. As Neil learns more about them, so does the reader, but you also learn a lot more about Neil, and maybe he isn't quite the guy you thought he was. None of them are perfect, and they're all messier than before, but that's what makes them so interesting. This is the book where you start to love all those weirdos you met in the first one, and their character types begin to feel more human and real. The one person standing in their way is Andrew, and the only one who can break through his personal barriers is Neil. The Raven King takes everything that was good about The Foxhole Court and heightens it: the stakes are raised, everything is more intense, and the characters are all so much more. The Raven King The Foxes are a fractured mess, but their latest disaster might be the miracle they've always needed to come together as a team. I need to stop judging series by their first novel because the second one is always infinitely better.
